What Is a Skincare Fridge and Why Would I Need One?

Even if you’re a skincare aficionado, it’s possible that you’ve never heard of a skincare fridge. Believe it or not, it’s pretty much what it sounds like — a cute little fridge that you can keep in your bedroom or bathroom to store your cosmetics and skin care. Ranging in price from about $30 to about $150 (that’s the average--some go as high as about $750), they’re small enough to sit on your bedside table or dresser and are used to keep your makeup and skincare cold.

The main idea of a skincare fridge is that it will keep your skincare products just cold enough to help them last a big longer. Although it won’t extend their shelf life forever, it will help some ingredients to last a bit longer. If you live in a climate that’s hot and/or humid, it could make a real difference, at least as far as making sure certain products don’t end up in a big melted blob in your medicine cabinet.

It’s also thought that by keeping them in the fridge, you’ll help keep bacteria and mold away from them. You’d kind of have to be in the habit of leaving them out and open for that to happen- but if you do have a tendency to do that, and/or you live in the above referenced hot and humid climate, it might not be a bad idea.

There’s also the space factor. We don’t know about you but our kitchen refrigerators are packed to the gills and frankly, we just don’t love the idea of keeping our masks with our groceries. Just the idea of having your skincare sitting nicely and neatly while keeping cold in its own little fridge is appealing in and of itself.

Another reason for a skincare fridge? You’ll be more likely to keep your skincare products and gadgets cool! If you’ve never done that, trust us when we say you haven’t lived until you’ve felt the cool spritz of a toner on a hot summer’s day or the refreshing feeling of cleansing your skin with a cold cleanser after a long workout.

Your kitchen fridge is generally set at a much lower temperature than a skincare fridge, which can cause your products to get a little too cold. Try a skincare fridge once and you’ll never put your skincare products — or your skincare tools — anywhere other than the fridge. We highly recommend storing products that are more likely to oxidize due to heat and humidity- such as your Vitamin C serum - in a skincare fridge to prolong its shelf life.

Also, human nature just being what it is, chances are you’ll be much more likely to stick to your skincare regime if you have something in your room, reminding you to do it. And of course, there is the cute factor. There’s just something so darned adorable about skincare fridges that it’s hard not to want one.

How Is a Skincare Fridge Different From a Regular Fridge?

If you’re like most people, you’re probably thinking to yourself, “OK, but how is a skincare fridge different from a regular fridge?” Why wouldn’t I just put my skincare in my regular fridge? Well, aside from the fact that it’s a lot smaller, a skincare fridge is actually not quite as cold as your regular fridge. This is important because a regular fridge can actually keep your skincare products so cold that they can make them hard to use — to the point where you have to wait a while for them to warm up.

What Types of Skin Care Products Would You Put in a Skincare Fridge?

There’s little you couldn’t put in a skin care fridge in terms of your skin care products, especially because using a skin care product that’s been in the fridge feels so incredible. You can put everything from your cleanser to your toner to your moisturizer in there, especially in the summer months.

You can also put your gua sha and jade rollers in there as well! Just make sure you’re ready for the cold sensation when you put them on your skin. The cool stone can help calm your skin when applied.
