If you are reading this, it's highly likely you are here because using cruelty free and/or vegan skincare products is important to you, but do you know what those terms really mean? Many do not, which is why in this blog post, we’re going to talk about what “cruelty free” really means, what vegan skin care is, and how to be 100% certain the skincare products you’re using are vegan and cruelty free. We have rounded up some of our favorite vegan and cruelty free skincare products.
IN A NUTSHELL
Main Takeaways: The term cruelty free usually means that a product was not tested on animals. It does not mean that it doesn’t contain animal ingredients, byproducts, or animal-derived ingredients.
Good to Know: Cruelty free is a term that is not regulated by the government, so it’s important to check organizations like Leaping Bunny to make sure a product or skincare set you’re interested in is truly cruelty free.

Cruelty Free Skin Care
Believe it or not, the term cruelty free isn’t actually regulated in North America, so it has been left up to each individual company to decide what it means for their brand. Generally speaking, most companies use cruelty free to mean they did not conduct any animal testing on a product. This does not mean, however, that the company didn’t hire a third party to test their products on animals, nor does it mean the ingredients weren’t individually tested on animals. It also doesn’t mean that the company doesn’t do animal testing in other countries to meet their requirements for sale.
One great resource for researching if a skincare brand is truly cruelty free is with the Leaping Bunny Program. Brands certified by their program do not test their products or ingredients on animals at any stage of their production process. We are proud to say that Fleur & Bee is Leaping Bunny certified.
Does Cruelty Free Mean Vegan?
“Great,” you may be saying to yourself. “But if a product is cruelty free, does that mean it’s also vegan?” It’s a good question and a frequent assumption. The answer is, no– cruelty free is not the same as vegan. Cruelty free refers to animal testing, while vegan refers to animal products, animal byproducts or ingredients produced by animals (i.e. honey or milk). While many of the brands that have earned the Leaping Bunny Certification are vegan, some are not. Some brands may be vegan, but are owned by companies that are not. If using both vegan and cruelty free products is important to you, be sure to do a little more research before clicking that “buy” button. We know this may all sound a bit complicated, so to help you make the right choice, we outlined all the differences between vegan and cruelty-free skincare in this article.
