Knowledge Drop: How Does a Moisturizer Work?
So how does a moisturizer work, exactly?
Basically, it helps to replenish the water content of the skin that’s naturally lost through our day-to-day activities and environmental exposures. (Late nights and too many cocktails can definitely dehydrate!)
Here’s the basic science. The skin has three layers: the epidermis, dermis and hypodermis.
The epidermis is the surface layer. Then there’s the dermis, which includes nerves, blood vessels, hair shafts, sweat glands, and sebaceous glands. Sebaceous glands are what produce sebum — an oily substance that serves as a natural lubricant (moisturizer) for our skin. Lastly, there’s the hypodermis, which contains fat, nerves, and blood vessels.
(P.S. If you feel like geeking out on the topic, we here are some tricks to keeping your skin hydrated and tips on how to properly apply a moisturizer.)
Crème de la Cream supplies moisture to your skin through naturally-sourced ingredients that mimic the body’s own lubricants (a la sebum). It also provides a protective layer against the further loss of H2O and boosts skin quality with antioxidants.
We designed this cream with simplicity and effectiveness in mind. Read on to learn more about all of the key ingredients.
What’s in Our Vegan Face Moisturizer?
It’s incredibly important to know what you’re putting on your face. Your complexion is the first thing people see, and an effective moisturizer will keep you looking radiant, confident, and fresh.
Toxic chemicals have no place on your face (you can quote us on that).
So, let’s delve into some of the key ingredients used in our natural, vegan face cream! We’ve broken it down into two categories. Ingredients that moisturize, and bonus add-ons.
Moisturizing Ingredients:
Organic aloe - While aloe is traditionally known for its after-sun soothing properties, it has even more applications to give you the glowing skin you’re going for. Aloe is a nutrient-rich plant, and includes Vitamins A, B, C, D and E — as well as minerals like magnesium, potassium and zinc. It can calm and soothes skin, provide moisture, and help remove build up from the surface.
Acai fruit - You’ve probably heard of (and eaten) acai bowls, but this superfood has applications that go well beyond breakfast food. Acai is known as an antioxidant powerhouse — meaning it’s packed with good-for-you nutrients that fight toxins and help protect your skin. Acai also possesses fatty acids which can help you keep it tight! (Your skin, that is.)
Glycerin - You may not be familiar with glycerin, but it’s a plant-based humectant. Translated, that means it actually attracts water, which is key when you’re trying to stay hydrated! It keeps water within your skin, where it belongs.
Matrixyl 3000 - Hopefully we’re not losing you with the scientific terminology! (It’s simpler than it sounds, trust us.) Matrixyl 3000 is an anti-aging peptide made up of two proteins. A peptide is a protein (the building blocks of cells), and they help our cells communicate. Over time, they don’t work as effectively to give our skin what it needs, which leads to signs of aging. Matrixyl 3000 combats that, however, and keeps your skin looking supple and fresh!
Organic green tea - Most of us are aware that drinking green tea is good for you — but who knew it could benefit your appearance? It has some incredible properties when used in a moisturizer or face cream. Rich in antioxidants (thanks to its delicately harvested leaves), it can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Organic gotu kola - This ancient ingredient is the best thing you’ve never heard of. It’s an herb that’s been around forever, and has a remarkable combination of amino acids, beta carotene, fatty acids and phytochemicals that all lead to amazing results for your skin.
Ubiquinone (Coenzyme Q10) - Often referred to as Q10, this nutrient is produced naturally in the body. As the years go by, however, we need a bit more to boost the health of our skin. Its antioxidant effects can help protect your skin from nasty environmental stressors.
Ingredients with Added Benefits:
Vitamin C - Vitamin C is the ultimate skin care ingredient. It’s technically called ascorbic acid and naturally occurs in our bodies (and we consume it through foods like citrus fruits). At Fleur & Bee, we use Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (a derivative of Vitamin C) instead of pure L-Ascorbic Acid. It’s more stable and provides the same benefits without the risk of oxidation and irritation that’s often associated with L-Ascorbic Acid. A crucial antioxidant, Vitamin C helps to boost skin rejuvenation and provide a fresh and revitalized appearance, as well as temporarily firming and tightening your face. Win!
Pomegranate - Obviously we’ve had a lot to say about antioxidants, but honestly, you can rarely have too many. These substances provide amazing protection against toxic free radicals that can negatively affect your health and lead to premature aging. Pomegranate in particular is a potent antioxidant that is a high source of the all-important micronutrient ellagic acid.
Honeysuckle - It’s hard not to love this fragrant flower, but beyond its compelling scent, it actually has nutritive properties that can help bolster your skin’s youthful appearance. Honeysuckle is known for its ability to soothe the skin, and it’s rich in antioxidants like flavonoids and saponins — excellent tools for fighting free radicals.
Vitamin B3 - This vitamin (with the hard-to-pronounce scientific name of niacinamide) helps to even skin tone and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It serves as a natural protectant, boosting skin immunity and helping to fight occasional redness and other damage done by yucky environmental toxins.
Vitamin E - Another of the primary antioxidants, Vitamin E offers significant skin protection. It’s been shown to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and discoloration, plus soften, rejuvenate, and provide nutritive effects to your skin. Basically it boosts all the good stuff your skin needs!
Organic sunflower - Extracted from the iconic yellow blooms we all love, sunflower oil has been utilized for skin and hair for centuries. It’s rich in nutrients (including mono and polyunsaturated fats and Vitamin E) and antioxidants and has natural calming properties. Sunflower helps to create a smoother looking appearance, soothe occasional redness, and promote an even skin tone when used in a face cream.
