Best Basic Skin Care Routine
Whether you’re tired, in a rush, or just want the most basic of routines, our chill and frill-free basic skincare routine is both fool proof and just enough for your skin to get all it needs, presuming that the chosen formulas are both high quality and appropriate for your skin type. And… maybe you should sit down for this: it includes only three steps. No, you are not hallucinating and yes you read that right – THREE!
Step 1. Cleanse
Proper cleansing can thoroughly transform your skin as it rids your face of dirt, excess oils, bacteria, allergens, product (think makeup or sunscreen; things that can be fine and even necessary for your face, but shouldn’t live there permanently), environmental stressors, and anything else that that can muck it up and lead to premature aging. If that’s not reason enough to get serious about washing your face, we don’t know what is.
Cleansers come in all forms; gels, creams, foams, and even cleansing waters. When choosing one for you, it is always best to cater to your skin type. Oily skin tends to do better with lighter formulas in general, so reach for things like gels and foams, while those with normal to dry skin can always benefit from the extra moisture afforded by a cream formula. Or skip the analyzing altogether and choose one that is designed for all skin types, like Fleur & Bee’s So Clean!. It has a light gel-like consistency that is great for oily skin, but contains a nourishing blend of plant-based oils to encourage your skin’s natural barrier and replenish moisture loss. Whatever you choose, be sure to stay away from sulfates and other detergents that can be too harsh on the skin. And, remember that gentler is always better, no matter what your skin type.
As far as frequency goes, depending on your skin type you may be able to cleanse only once daily. Those with oily skin will likely want to wash both morning and night. But if you find yourself on the drier side, experiment with doing so just once before bed to wash off the day and see how your skin responds. If you find that you’re in need of some shine control but are maybe not quite oily enough for a second cleanse, incorporate a midday spritz of botanically-based toner or maybe some blotting paper to prioritize moisture preservation while helping to keep skin clean and clarified!
Step 2: Moisturize
Many people think moisturizing your face is primarily done to preserve a youthful glow, but it goes far beyond that. Our skin is our body’s first line of defense against infection, allergens, and other nasties. So, preventing cracks in its surface, which can often be caused by dryness, is critical not just for your complexion, but also comprehensive health. Further, no matter how gently you cleanse, moisture loss can still occur. Following it up with a nutrient dense moisturizer then helps to seal in hydration while protecting from unwanted penetrants.
Moisturizing is something you will definitely want to do twice daily no matter what your skin type. But your product should be formulated with you in mind and in a similar fashion to your cleanser - lighter formulas for oily skin, thicker more occlusive creams for dry skin. Our Crème de la Cream however offers the best of both worlds and leaves skin feeling soft and hydrated without any greasy residue or clogged pores, all while visibly reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and evening out skin tone. Give it a go to simplify your search!
Step 3: Protect (from UV Rays and Sun Damage)
Sunscreen should be applied every morning as the last component of your routine and before stepping out to go literally anywhere. Not even a quick walk to the mailbox excuses the need for sunscreen as sun damage can occur regardless of your age, the time of day, or even the weather. And since UV rays are the primary cause for every form of visible skin aging, if you aren’t religiously applying sunscreen, you need to start… yesterday. It can however be limited to just once per day, further simplifying your routine!
Sunscreen is however probably one of the hardest skincare products to shop for, since many of them include an array of chemicals and hard to pronounce ingredients that, while serving a purpose, can also clog pores and have a variety of unwanted effects. But good ones are out there so don’t forfeit your right to be choosy; you only get one face after all! We love Kinship’s Self Reflect. This 100% mineral sunscreen has won a multitude of best in beauty awards for its clean, plant-based formula. It is also vegan and cruelty-free.
And that’s it - a simple routine for any lifestyle offering zero stress and zero excuses. Finally! Who knew that caring for your skin could really be as easy as 1, 2, 3!
